Working an ADN nurse's schedule and sitting in a classroom rarely fit together, which is why online completion has become the default route to a BSN. Magnet-designated hospitals and many health-system leadership postings expect the bachelor's, and a 12-hour shift rotation leaves little room for campus evenings.
The ranked list covers seven of the best nursing schools in Michigan with online RN to BSN programs, including some of the fastest RN to BSN programs, from Central Michigan's under-12-month track to Spring Arbor's 20-month, 38-credit format. Tuition runs from roughly $8,960 to over $44,000 across the programs.
The cost gap is wide, but transfer credit and clinical placement often decide how quickly you actually finish.

Behind the List: What Moved a Michigan Program up or Down
The real tension for most Michigan RNs is not whether to earn an online BSN, but how to balance tuition against program quality when every option calls itself flexible. That tension shaped the order below.
What counted first
Every ranked program had to offer a genuinely online or hybrid RN to BSN path; on-campus-only programs did not make the list. Among those that cleared that bar, programs were compared on a mix of affordability (net price and tuition) and student outcomes (graduation and retention) plus published program-level earnings where available. The goal was to let affordability across affordable RN to BSN programs and student success carry the most weight. Practical, recognizable factors, not hidden formulas.
Where the limits are
Be aware that graduation rates and net price reflect the whole university, not the RN to BSN students in particular. A small online nursing division may outperform a university's overall retention numbers, or the reverse. Program-level earnings are not published for every school.
What the ranking cannot see
This list does not capture how many of your prior credits a school will accept, whether your employer will reimburse tuition, or how well the program fits your schedule. Those personal factors can change your real cost and time to degree more than the ranking order. Accreditation was verified separately and is shown in the table below so you can check it yourself; the later sections on transfer credit and employer benefits cover the rest.
RN to BSN Program Cost in Michigan: Public Universities vs. Private Colleges
University of Michigan-Flint has the lowest institution-wide net price in our data, at $7,007 a year. That answers much of the "cheapest online RN to BSN in Michigan" question, but it is not the whole story. Averaged across the public schools ranked here, net price is about $14,889. Across the private schools it is about $16,536. The gap is smaller than most nurses expect when comparing private vs public nursing schools.
Per-Credit Math for About 30 Credits
The formula is simple: credits remaining × per-credit rate + fees.
- Michigan State University: 30 × $742.50 = $22,275 before any fees.
- Eastern Michigan University: the 2025-2026 rate is $700 plus a $25 program fee, or $725 per credit. At 30 credits that is about $21,750. Confirm the rate for the online RN to BSN with the school, since the general tuition schedule may not apply.
- University of Michigan-Flint: $594.25 per credit, with a published 2025-2026 total of $15,828. Registration ($374) and orientation ($50) fees are listed separately.
Two programs advertise flat totals. Oakland University lists $9,995 for 32 credits in 12 months. Baker College lists $8,960 for 2026-2027 with no student or program fees. Spring Arbor University's $499 per credit for 2026-2027 adds up to $59,880 across 120 credits, so ask whether that rate applies to every credit or only the new ones.
What Advertised Prices Often Leave Out
"No fees" statements do not always settle whether ordinary university charges apply, so ask for a written itemized estimate. Look for these:
- Technology fees (Spring Arbor lists $128).
- Registration or orientation charges.
- Clinical or practicum costs, such as drug screens or compliance tracking (EMU's handbook requires a drug screen).
- Application fees, which Central Michigan requires but does not state publicly.
- Graduation fees.
A complete 2026 fee schedule was not available for every ranked program, so treat these figures as starting points.
A Caution on Net Price
Net price is an average across all students at an institution, mostly traditional undergraduates. It is not a quote for RN to BSN Requirements, because RN to BSN students usually pay per credit for far fewer credits.
One Way to Cut the Bill
Check your employer's tuition reimbursement before you enroll. Many health systems cover part of the cost, and every dollar covered comes straight off the totals above.
CCNE and ACEN Accreditation for Each Ranked Michigan Program
Why the Accreditor Matters
RN to BSN accreditation is the quiet credential behind your degree. A BSN from a program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) tells employers your coursework met national standards. Many Michigan health systems look for it when hiring for BSN-preferred roles or approving clinical ladder promotions. It matters again later, because most MSN programs in Michigan and nurse practitioner programs expect applicants to hold a BSN from a nationally accredited nursing program. If you plan to use military tuition assistance or VA education benefits, accreditation and program approval can affect eligibility, so check with your education or benefits office before you enroll.
Status by Program
Every school in our ranking holds CCNE accreditation for its baccalaureate nursing program. We could not confirm ACEN accreditation for any of them, which is not a red flag: ACEN is more common at the associate degree level. Only Western Michigan University publishes its accreditation term on its own site. For the others, the next review date is marked "Confirm with school."
- Central Michigan University: CCNE accredited. Next review: Confirm with school.
- University of Detroit Mercy: CCNE accredited. Next review: Confirm with school.
- University of Olivet: CCNE accredited since 2020. Next review: Confirm with school.
- Chamberlain University: CCNE accredited.1 Next review: Confirm with school.
- Eastern Michigan University: CCNE accredited, including the RN to BSN pathway. Next review: Confirm with school.
- Western Michigan University: CCNE accredited through 2027.2
- Northern Michigan University: CCNE accredited.3 Next review: Confirm with school.
- Saginaw Valley State University: CCNE accredited.4 Next review: Confirm with school.
Verify Before You Commit
Accreditation renews on a cycle, and status can change. To verify nursing school accreditation, search your shortlisted schools in the CCNE online directory and ask admissions for the current term in writing. That step matters most at Western Michigan, where the published term runs through 2027.

From ADN Diploma to BSN: the Typical Online Path
Most Michigan RNs follow the same five steps to finish a BSN online. How long each step takes depends largely on how many transfer credits you bring in, as covered in the timeline section above.

What You Need to Apply, Including Out-of-State Eligibility
Admission rules differ across Michigan's online RN to BSN programs. Use this checklist to compare schools, then confirm the details with each admissions office.
- RN license (or NCLEX timing)Most programs expect an active, unencumbered RN license. Some allow earlier entry. Central Michigan offers provisional admission and up to 12 credits while you prepare for the NCLEX-RN. UM-Flint lets you apply before finishing your associate degree, but you need the license before any 400-level nursing course.
- Minimum GPAExpect a minimum of 2.5 to 2.75. Michigan State and UM-Flint look for 2.75 in your nursing coursework. Western Michigan, Central Michigan, and Detroit Mercy set the bar at 2.5.
- Prerequisite degree and coursesYou need an associate degree or diploma in nursing. Michigan State also requires anatomy and physiology, introductory psychology, writing, and math, each with a grade of at least 2.0.
- Official transcriptsPlan to send official transcripts from every college you attended. UM-Flint explicitly requires them.
- Background check and immunizationsThe admission requirements we reviewed don't spell these out. Ask each program whether it requires them and when they're due.
- Out-of-state eligibilityWe couldn't confirm NC-SARA status or restricted states for these programs. Michigan State directs out-of-state students to their state board before starting coursework. Check with both the school and your board before you apply.
